50 Years Of Rock
1965 – 2015. The 50th year of Rock.
By Chris P. James
This year, 2015 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Rock. 1965 was the year when this new hybrid of music dominated the charts and began to be taken seriously by the media and by music-listeners of all ages. Of course, classical, jazz, folk, blues, gospel, soundtracks and other established forms were taken seriously by adults. But rock & roll wasn’t. It was widely regarded as throwaway music for teenagers, for dancing. By 1965, the first wave of rock & roll fans had grown into adults. The music that young people enjoyed the most had evolved into a more substantial art form, labelled “Rock”. It was arguably the most interesting, though newly discovered, genre. It peacefully overtook the world.
